Books, movies and documentaries, oh my!

by brigid on January 2, 2013

One of my resolutions for 2013 is to read more books, see more movies, and watch a number of documentaries that I’ve been meaning to watch. I started Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn one day, and finished it the next day. Not a bad start. Though my kids probably would like a little more parenting from me on the whole.

So I’m going to keep track of what I’m reading, what I like and dislike, and I hope you’ll share with me books that you have really enjoyed.

A few that are on my list to read right now:

Elsewhere a memoir by Richard Russo

The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling

Bel Canto by Ann Patchett (re-read)

On Writing by Stephen King

I’m also going to try to watch some more movies, both in the theatre and on Netflix. Mike and I saw SIlver Linings Playbook on New Years’ Eve and we both really liked it. I will watch it again when it comes out on HBO. Two thumbs up. Jennifer Lawrence is quickly becoming a fave of mine.

The night before that we saw The King’s Speech on Netflix, which I really enjoyed. There are so many movies that I have missed over the last few years. I can start with the Oscar nominees and work my way back through the last few years. Are there any you think I should start with? Indie favorites?

I follow UnMarketing on Facebook and he asked about documentaries and I compiled a huge list to watch, many of which are on Netflix.

Waiting for Superman, Forks Over Knives, Hungry for Change, Vegucated, Craigslist Joe, Searching for Sugarman, and Murder by Proxy

I think this is a resolution I’m really going to enjoy.

What are you reading and watching these days? Do you have a list? What are your past favorites?

“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” is a well written first novel by Rachel Joyce.
“How It All Began” by Penelope Lively.
“The Uninvited Guests” by Sadie Jones
These are favs of mine and they are all British writers.

Lit by Mary Karr! Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett. NOT 1776 by David McCollough. I tried reading that to increase my braininess and couldn’t make it past page 37. Renewed it TWICE. Page 37.
